24 September 2019

The 50-year story of how science has helped the New Zealand apple industry to reduce its pesticide use has been turned into a book. Farewell Silent Spring – the New Zealand Apple Story, written by leading scientist Howard Wearing (ex-Plant & Food Research), tells the story of how a dedicated R&D programme introduced pest monitoring, biological controls and selective chemical use to ensure New Zealand’s apples are pest-free and with no detectable residues, meeting the phytosanitary requirements of markets worldwide.
