Fonterra wins Innovation in Food & Beverage award

Fonterra has taken out the top prize for Innovation in Food & Beverage at this year’s New Zealand Innovation Awards, for its research into breast milk alternatives for mothers who aren’t able to breastfeed.

The Food & Beverage category of the awards was sponsored by Plant & Food Research. It recognises ambitious innovators who are striving to meet customer demand in national and export markets with uniqueness and innovation in either a new category or the transformation of an existing category.

Fonterra’s new Anmum formula is based on research into breast milk composition, particularly gangliosides (GA), a type of molecule involved in a healthy immune systems. GA not only supports the health of the infant’s gut and immune system, but also brain development.

The Award Evaluators said the company demonstrated “awesome investment in clinical research to substantiate health claims,” and that it was “pleasing to see Fonterra collaborating with New Zealand based research providers as well as internationally.”

Sunfed Ltd were Highly Commended in the Food & Beverage category for their Sunfed Meats – meat made from plant proteins – and also won the Innovation Excellence in Research award.

“It was great to see so many exciting developments in the Food & Beverage sector,” says Dr Jocelyn Eason, GM Food Innovation at Plant & Food Research and one of the award evaluators. “I congratulate Fonterra, and all the other finalists, who demonstrate the high calibre of innovation taking place in New Zealand’s food companies.”

Other winners at the NZ Innovation Awards included Zespri (Export Innovator and Sustained Innovation Excellence), Farmshed Labs (Agribusiness & Environment), Ligar (Start-Up Innovator). Wine Grenade, a product for micro-oxygenation of wine based on Plant & Food Research technology, was Highly Commended in the Start-Up Innovator category.
